What Happens When You Get Your House Painted? Here's What You Need to Know

06-17-2020

Are you getting your house painted for the first time?

It can be a bit daunting having a team of workers in your home, especially when you haven't experienced it before. Luckily, there are ways for you to prepare.

By knowing more about what you can expect and what your workers will need from you, you can make sure you're the perfect host for house painting.

Check out our guide with everything you need to know when getting your home painted.

How Much Does It Cost to Get Your House Painted?

As with most work in a house, painting a house comes with a price. The current average for exterior painting is between $2.50-$4.00 for every square foot of the wall. For interiors, that price drops to between $1.50-$3.

Of course, the price will vary depending on where you live and the team you hire. It's usually a good idea to look around and get quotes from various different companies. You can then find the average price in your town and make sure you don't pay too high or too low.

There Will Be a Lot of Prep Time

The painting of a house requires a whole lot of preparation. If your team seems to have been around for a while but isn't getting anywhere, don't panic! They're just preparing your house.

Up to 30% of the time your painters spend in your home could be just working on prep. It's the difference between a high-quality finish and a rushed job, so you should actually be more suspicious if they're getting straight to the painting.

Before they start the work you're waiting for, the team may have to wash the walls, cover the surrounding furniture, and get to know the area they're working with.

Get Your Home Ready for Painting

Whilst your team will do a lot of preparation, they don't want to have to do everything. It's a great idea to set up your home for their arrival before the work starts. It'll be a big help for your painters and help you both get off to a good start!

For interior paintwork, make sure your house is clean. Vacuum everywhere, including all the hard to reach spots, and pick up any small objects that might get in the way. This could include soap dishes, kitchen equipment on your counters, and decor in your living room.

If you can, start moving bigger furniture to the middle of your rooms, too. This will save a lot of time and help your painters get on with their work much quicker.

If you're having exterior paintwork, trim away any bushes, shrubs, or trees that are touching the walls of your house. Make sure there's plenty of room for your team to get around the entire perimeter of your home. You should also clear out your gutters and downspouts, helping speed up the prep process.

Be Prepared for Some Disturbance

Although your painters will try their best to stay out of your way, sometimes it just isn't possible. Painting houses is a big job and your team will be moving around constantly, so get ready for a few odd days!

Don't plan anything big on days when you have painters round. Avoid having guests over and be prepared to move rooms as your team works all the way around your home.

There's also going to be a lot of mess around your home. From ladders to tins of paint, it all has to stay somewhere! Painters will always do their best to be as neat as possible, but be ready for a lot of clutter until they're done.

If you do need to use a specific room at a specific time, such as your kitchen or an office, let your team know. You can work together to make it work, ensuring they're done with that space when you need it. Your painters will be more than happy to work around you, just make sure you always communicate with them about your needs.

You Can Ask for Touch-Ups

It isn't easy to paint a house and there might be areas that aren't quite perfect. If you see an area where the work isn't quite up to scratch, let your team know straight away.

By asking whilst your painters are still there, they can do any touch-ups easily. They already have everything they need and will be happy to do it. If you wait until they're gone to let them know, it's going to take your painters time to come back, set up, and fix the area.

If you don't notice until they've gone, don't worry! Although it's not as convenient, your team will still be happy to come back and fix any little issues.

They'll Always Clean Up

Although your painters will make a mess, they'll always clear up after. You can expect your home to be back to normal when they leave, with all the dust vacuumed up and any rubbish cleared away.

If you'd prefer they clean their things away after every day, just ask them. It's likely they'll be happy to do it, but they won't know unless you talk to them!
