Is your home looking a little dull?

A lick of paint can go a long way if you're looking to transform your home! From brightening a dim room to making your home look more stylish, you'll be amazed at what a tin of paint can do.

If you're looking to renovate, it's a good idea to plan how you're going to paint before you jump in. Knowing what colors you'll use and where they'll go is essential to creating a beautiful, co-ordinated house.

Home Painting Color Choices

It's painting 101 to choose your colors carefully. Rather than buying the first nice color you see, think about how it will work in your home.

If you have a smaller room, avoid using dark or bold colors. Light neutrals will work best, such as a cream, white, or even a light sage green. If you have a large room, you can be more adventurous with your colors, but only if it gets plenty of natural light.

If you want a splash of color, opt for warmer tones in north-facing rooms. These usually receive cooler, harsher light so the warm colors will help balance out the room. Paints with pink or yellow undertones work well here.

For south-facing rooms, the light can make colors look more yellow, so avoid anything with yellow undertones. Opt for a cool, light color that will be warmed by the natural light.

Always remember your furnishings too. If you have a lot of color in your furniture, countertops, and art, stick to a neutral background so your decor can take center stage. There's a lot to think about when choosing the colors to paint your home, but taking the time to get it right will definitely be worth it.

Choose a Feature Wall

If you do want to add a splash of color, creating a feature wall is one of the best house interior paint ideas. An entire room painted in lighthouse red or navy blue will be overwhelming. But stick to just one wall and it becomes a stylish way to add a splash of color to your space.

Choose a way that highlights a feature in your room. For example, a wall with a fireplace is a great choice. Or, the wall by your bed or dining table, helping define and highlight the different areas in your space.

Try and pick an inside house paint that compliments your room, too. If you have accents of blue in your furnishings, choose the same wall color to help bring them out. Creating a flow of color in your space is essential when painting a feature wall.

Two-Tone Walls

For a modern look, use multiple colors on your walls. This can be done in a number of ways.

For example, you could have a few stripes of bold color on a feature wall. Or, you could have the bottom third of your wall painted a different tone to the top two thirds, known as a two-tone wall. If you have a brightly colored wall, break it up with a strip of white running horizontally through it.

You could also use two similar tones for an artistic, unique look. For example, a soft pink room could have a lavender strip by the skirting boards and around your window panes.

Paint Your Ceiling

Using boldly colored paint in a house can be tough to do. But what about if it's on your ceiling?

Whilst it may sound like an odd idea, painting your ceiling a different color to the rest of your walls is becoming a popular idea. This works best in a room with plain white walls, making for a statement that's not overwhelming.

Choose a sunny yellow ceiling in a bright room with plenty of windows. Or, in a more cozy room, opt for a charcoal gray for a stylish, warm feeling.

If you paint your ceiling, make sure it matches the furnishings of your room. For example, have cushions and a rug in the same color. This will help it blend into your room and create an uninterrupted flow.

Use Stencils for Decorative Walls

If you want to be more adventurous with your home painting, pictures can be a modern and stylish addition. Like decorative wallpaper, you can add images to your walls using stencils.

For example, you could paint branches onto a bedroom wall for a cozy, nature theme. Or, bring your bathroom to life with big palm leaves, which are simple to repeat with one stencil.

Painting images onto your walls can be tricky to get right, so practice first on a sheet of wallpaper. If you think you've got what it takes then go for it! If you're worried, call in the professionals to help.
